TEAM Becky

Rebecca means to bind with love

Becky was diagnosed with autism at 2.3 years of age in 1996.  At that time in Pictou County there was no early intervention, and no real known treatment for children with autism.  When we asked how to help her with her severe tantrums, we were told to cut her bedroom door in half so we could observe her to prevent her injury.  When I told said there must be something out there to help us reach her, some way to help us teach her to communicate and aleviate her stress, I was told there was so much written out there about autism that that meant no one really knew what to do for autism, and that I mustn't read too much as it would only confuse me.  Through online research we did develop our oun home early intervention program based on Dr. O I var Lovaas' Applied Behavioral Analysis model.  Since then there is so much more for children with autism, early intervention, PEC and other picture communication systems, technologies to assist our kids, and even more valuable Understanding and Awareness.
